Suceeded by: Calgary Flames (CGY)
Founded in 1972 alongside the New York Islanders, the Atlanta Flames were Atlanta's first professional hockey team and the NHL's first team in the American south.
In their eight seasons, they played at Omni Arena, one of the last NHL arenas without luxury suites.
The Flames made the playoffs six times but never reached the second round. They were swept four times and won a single game in the other two years.
Amid declining attendance and the 1970s real estate crunch, the team relocated after the 1979-1980 season to Calgary, AB.
Among their notable players were the Miracle on Ice goaltender Jim Craig and their team captains: Keith McCreary, Tom Lysiak (also the team's top scorer), Pat Quinn (HHOF Builder and inventor of the terms "upper body injury" and "lower body injury", and Jean Pronovost (younger brother of HHOF player Marcel Pronovost).
