In 1941, the renamed New York Americans played one final season. Former owner Tom Dutton operated the NHL-owned team on a shoestring with some players enlisting in WWII and others being sold to other teams for cash to cover expenses. Despite practicing in Brooklyn, there was no suitable arena for games, and the Amerks continued to play games in Manhattan.
Despite interest in creating a new arena after WWII, the NHL would not agree to reinstate the Americans. This kicked off the Original Six era.
